Ferrari sent three 312 PBs to Le Mans in 1973, each one taking its turn at the front. The #17 of Carlos Reutemann and Tim Schenken inherited the lead after the sister #16 lost 25 minutes to a fuel tank problem and the leading Matra retired with engine failure — and held it for five hours, before a Ferrari engine breakdown of its own ended the run in the eleventh hour.

It was Ferrari's last works prototype campaign at Le Mans. The sister #15, driven by Ickx and Redman, would later come within two hours of winning before suffering the identical fate. Enzo Ferrari withdrew the team from sports car racing entirely once the 1973 season ended.
