One prototype. One show. Ferrari's first and only E85 biofuel concept car.
The Ferrari F430 Spider Biofuel was unveiled at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit — Ferrari's statement that performance and sustainability were not opposites. The concept took a standard F430 Spider and modified the fuel feed system and engine management CPU to run on E85, a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% petrol. The result: 10 hp more than the standard car, 4% more torque, 5% less CO2 emissions, all with an unchanged compression ratio and identical weight. Ferrari presented it as part of a broader R&D programme targeting a 40% emissions reduction by 2012.
Only one was ever built. It never reached production — not for lack of capability, but because E85 infrastructure in Ferrari's key markets wasn't ready. The car exists as a single prototype, and the distinctive green livery it wore at Detroit is the only colour it has ever been seen in.
The F430 Spider beneath the concept is the full article: 4.3-litre naturally aspirated V8, 490 PS, 0–100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, 295 km/h, with the E-Diff and F1-SuperFast paddle-shift transmission that made the F430 one of the finest driver's cars of its era.
