BBR BG316 | 1:43 Ferrari 248 F1 | #5 Michael Schumacher | Italian Grand Prix Monza 2006 — WINNER | Limited 300 pcs | The Day the Greatest Ferrari Driver Said Goodbye — And Then Won
There are races, and then there are moments. The 2006 Italian Grand Prix at Monza was not merely a race. It was the stage on which Michael Schumacher chose to announce, on the very morning of the event, that he would retire from Formula One at the end of the season — and then, in front of a Tifosi crowd at the temple of speed, went out and won.
The sequence of events on September 10, 2006 is permanently etched in the memory of every Formula One witness. Schumacher qualified second, separated from pole-sitter Kimi Räikkönen by just 0.002 seconds — a gap so small it was barely measurable. At the start, Räikkönen made the better getaway and led. But the race unfolded with the intelligence and composure that had defined Schumacher's eleven years at Ferrari. Working the tyres, managing the pace, responding to the strategy, Schumacher eventually overtook Räikkönen to lead and held on to win by 8.050 seconds. It was his 90th Grand Prix victory for Ferrari — a number so vast it belongs in a category of its own. It was also, for many in the crowd and watching around the world, one of the most emotional moments the sport had ever produced: the greatest driver of his generation, in the scarlet car that had defined his career, winning at Monza on the day he told the world he was leaving.
The Ferrari 248 F1 that carried Schumacher to that victory was itself a landmark machine. The 52nd Ferrari Formula One car — carrying the internal project code 657 — the 248 F1 took its name from its defining technical characteristic: a new 2.4-litre eight-cylinder engine, the Tipo 056, Ferrari's return to V8 power for the first time since the 1964 Ferrari 158 F1. The Tipo 056 produced 730 horsepower at the season's opening and was developed to 785 hp at 19,000 rpm by season's end — all within a unit weighing just 95 kg. Designed by a team led by Ross Brawn, Rory Byrne, and Aldo Costa, with aerodynamics overseen by John Iley, the 248 F1 was built around a carbon fibre and honeycomb composite chassis, push-rod activated independent suspension at all four corners, Brembo ventilated carbon fibre disc brakes, and a seven-speed longitudinal semi-automatic sequential gearbox. Bridgestone supplied the tyres; Shell V-Power the fuel. The total weight with driver was 600 kg.
Over the course of 2006, the 248 F1 won nine Grands Prix — seven for Schumacher, two for Felipe Massa. It fought Fernando Alonso and the Renault R26 for the Drivers' Championship to the final round in Brazil, where Schumacher finished second in one of the most remarkable recovery drives in F1 history — recovering from a lap down after an early puncture to finish fourth, and subsequently to second on the road. The Constructors' title was lost by five points. In the Championship's final accounting, Schumacher finished second in the Drivers' standings and departed Ferrari with five Drivers' World Championships, six Constructors' titles alongside the Scuderia, and 91 Formula One victories — all records at the time.
