BBR BBRC094 | 1:43 Ferrari 458 Italia GTE Am | #57 Krohn Racing | 3rd in Class — 24 Hours of Le Mans 2012 | Krohn / Jönsson / Rugolo | The American Ferrari That Stood on the Podium at La Sarthe
There is something particular about an American team taking a Ferrari to the podium at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The 80th running of the world's greatest endurance race was held on June 16–17, 2012, and the No. 57 Krohn Racing Ferrari 458 Italia of Tracy Krohn, Nic Jönsson and Michele Rugolo — dressed in the team's distinctive dark green livery that had become one of the more recognisable colours in the GTE Am field — crossed the line third in class, delivering one of five podium results the team would take across the 2012 FIA World Endurance Championship season.
Krohn Racing is a genuinely American story in a discipline dominated by European operations. Founded in late 2005 by Tracy W. Krohn — Chairman and CEO of an oil and gas exploration company headquartered in Houston, Texas — the team began competing at the highest level of endurance racing with a commitment that went beyond the resources of most gentleman-driver programmes. Based in Buford, Georgia, Krohn partnered with Swedish co-driver Nic Jönsson, who had been with him since the early years, and for 2011 and 2012 added Italian Ferrari specialist Michele Rugolo — a combination that gave the team speed, endurance experience, and precision in equal measure. The trio had finished second in the 2011 ILMC GTE Am championship and arrived at Le Mans 2012 determined to improve on their previous La Sarthe result, which had ended in retirement with engine failure.
The 2012 season was the first full year of the FIA World Endurance Championship as it exists today, rebranded and restructured from the ILMC. Krohn Racing committed to all eight rounds with the new Ferrari 458 Italia in GTE Am specification — a machine built on a carbon fibre monocoque, powered by a naturally aspirated 4.5-litre V8 derived from the Ferrari F136 family, and developed specifically for endurance competition at the highest level. At Le Mans, Michele Rugolo took qualifying duties and placed the green Ferrari 53rd on the grid. The race unfolded as a sustained test of pace and consistency, and the No. 57 came through to finish third in the GTE Am class — the first Le Mans podium in Krohn Racing's history at the circuit running under its own name. It was the first of five podium finishes across the eight WEC rounds that year. The team finished third in the GTE Am championship at season's end, a result that reflected genuine competitiveness across an entire world championship season.
The 2012 Le Mans race itself was the first to be won by a hybrid electric vehicle, with the Audi R18 e-tron quattro of Lotterer, Fässler and Tréluyer taking the overall victory. In the GTE Am class, AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italias dominated the podium, with Krohn Racing's green car joining the celebration in third — a result that reflected the Ferrari 458 GTE's genuine strength in amateur-class endurance competition at the time.
