Two weeks before this race, Carlos Sainz was in hospital recovering from an appendectomy. On March 24, 2024, he won the Australian Grand Prix.
Starting from P2 at Albert Park, Sainz drafted Verstappen through lap 1 and passed him on lap 2 with DRS into Turn 9. Three laps later, Verstappen retired with brake failure — but the race was already Sainz's to lose. He controlled a two-stop race across 58 laps, managing gaps, extending stints, and delivering what he called a "perfect race" to beat teammate Leclerc by 2.4 seconds. Verstappen and Hamilton both retired. Russell crashed on the final lap. Ferrari took a 1-2. Sainz stood on the top step.
It was Ferrari's 244th Formula 1 victory, and the first non-Red Bull win of the 2024 season — ending a run of dominance that had stretched across the previous year. Sainz described it simply: "What a rollercoaster."
