There is only one Ferrari P540 Superfast Aperta in the world. One car, one owner, one story. BBR Models made two versions of it.
The first — BBRC032A — presents the car in its open-top Aperta configuration, as the real car was designed to be seen and driven. This second version — BBRC032B — presents the same car fitted with its hard top in place, showing the P540 Superfast as a closed berlinetta. It is a view of the car that reveals something different: with the roof fitted, the Pininfarina proportions read as a complete, uninterrupted surface, the long bonnet line flowing through the greenhouse into the tail without the visual interruption of the open cockpit. The gold finish gains a new quality with the hard top closed — the entire form becomes a single sculptural object, the way the Fantuzzi-built original from Fellini's film appeared in those brief nocturnal scenes: a complete, golden apparition. Limited to 200 pieces, this variant is equally tightly constrained as a collector piece, and represents the P540 as no other vantage point can show it.
The story behind the real car is among the most extraordinary in Ferrari's history of bespoke commissions. In 1968, Federico Fellini — the director of La Dolce Vita, 8½ and Amarcord — completed the third episode of "Histoires Extraordinaires", a short film anthology based on stories by Edgar Allan Poe. Fellini's segment, "Toby Dammit", starred Terence Stamp as a dissipated English actor haunted through nocturnal Rome by a vision of a small blonde girl, based on Poe's "Never Bet the Devil Your Head." For the production, Carrozzeria Fantuzzi built a special gold-coloured Ferrari — low, open, with faired headlamps and a Plexiglas windscreen — that appeared in the film's most hallucinatory sequences and then effectively vanished.
Decades later, that image stayed with Edward Walson — son of John Walson, the American inventor of cable television. In 2008, Walson approached Ferrari with a specific request: build me a modern version of that golden car. Ferrari's Special Projects programme — at that point only two years old, and the P540 would be only its second commission ever — accepted. Pininfarina was given the design brief. Walson was involved at every stage of development, from initial sketches to material choices to final delivery. The donor car was the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, sharing its 6.0-litre naturally aspirated 65° V12, its transaxle layout, and its fundamental architecture. Converting the closed coupé to an open-top car required reinforcing the chassis using finite element analysis and extensive carbon fibre — yet the weight increase over the donor car was kept to just 20 kg, a testament to the engineering precision applied. The complete development process, from first sketches to the road-legal, fully homologated finished car, took fourteen months. Edward Walson took delivery at the Fiorano circuit on December 10, 2009. His words: "This is the most special Christmas present of my life."
The P540 Superfast Aperta is road legal. It meets all international safety and homologation requirements. It can be driven on any public road in the world. There is only one of it. And it is gold — specifically because of Fellini, Fantuzzi, and Edgar Allan Poe.
