BBR BBR143D | 1:43 Maserati 4200GT Spyder 2001 | Dark Metal Silver | Hand-Built Resin by BBR — Giugiaro's Grand Tourer in Its Most Refined Expression

There is a colour that strips a car of theatre and returns it to architecture. Dark Metal Silver is that colour on the Maserati 4200GT Spyder. Where yellow announces and red asserts, a deep metallic silver simply reveals — the long bonnet, the muscular shoulder line, the taut rear quarters, the Trident on the grille — all read with the clarity of form that Giorgetto Giugiaro intended when he shaped this car at ItalDesign in the late 1990s. It is the colour chosen by drivers who wanted the car for what it was, not for what it signalled.

The 4200GT Spyder arrived at the 2001 Frankfurt Motor Show as the opening statement of a transformed Maserati. Ferrari had acquired the Modena brand in 1997 and spent the following years rebuilding it from the ground up — new engineering, new personnel, new direction. The Spyder was the first fully Ferrari-era Maserati to reach the public, and it carried two pieces of news of equal significance. The first was the car's existence as an open-top grand tourer, ending a long Maserati absence from the convertible market. The second was the engine.

The 4200GT Spyder was the world debut of the Ferrari-Maserati F136 engine family — a 4.2-litre naturally aspirated 90-degree V8 that this car presented to the world before Ferrari itself deployed the same architecture in its own products. With a bore and stroke of 92 mm and 80 mm respectively, a cross-plane forged steel crankshaft in place of the flat-plane unit used in the contemporary Ferrari 360, dual chain-driven overhead camshafts per bank, four valves per cylinder, variable intake valve timing, hydraulic tappets, and dry-sump lubrication, the Tipo F136 R produced 390 PS at 7,000 rpm and 450 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm. The compression ratio was 11.1:1. Two transmission choices were offered: a six-speed manual for classical engagement, and the Graziano Cambiocorsa automated paddle-shift unit for maximum pace. That same engine family subsequently went on to power the Ferrari F430, the 458 Italia, the California, and the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione — one of the most consequential V8 architectures in modern Italian automotive history, and the Maserati Spyder was where it first turned a wheel in a production car.

Giugiaro's body drew its front-end vocabulary from Maserati's racing sports cars of the 1960s, integrated the Trident into the radiator grille with the confidence of a marque entirely at ease with its own identity, and produced a silhouette — from the pronounced bonnet line to the swept cabin and short tail — that read as distinctly Italian without resorting to pastiche. The Spyder's wheelbase, at 2,440 mm, was shorter than the Coupé's 2,660 mm by a meaningful 220 mm, delivering a tighter, more responsive character on the road. Enrico Fumia designed the interior. The electric soft top stowed in thirty seconds. Zero to 100 km/h arrived in under five seconds. The top speed exceeded 285 km/h.

In Dark Metal Silver, every one of these qualities is present without distraction. The deep metallic finish catches light across Giugiaro's surface modelling in the way that flat colours cannot, the shifting depth of the paint responding to changing light with the same nuance the design rewards at every viewing angle. It is the colour the car's proportions most clearly support — and the one that places it firmly in the tradition of Italian grand touring at its most considered.

BBR Models of Saronno — the official model manufacturer of Ferrari, founded in 1984, with forty years of Italian hand-craft behind their work — renders the 4200GT Spyder in their precision resin format, in BBR's plexiglass showcase, brand new and factory sealed.
