BBR BBR143A | 1:43 Maserati 4200GT Spyder 2001 | Yellow | Hand-Built Resin by BBR — Maserati's Return to Open-Top Motoring, in the Most Extrovert Colour

In the late 1990s, Ferrari acquired Maserati and set about transforming it from a brand in crisis into something worthy of the Trident badge. The result, unveiled at the 2001 Frankfurt Motor Show, was a pair of cars that announced the transformation completely: the 4200GT Spyder and, a year later, the 4200GT Coupé. They were the first Maseratis designed entirely under Ferrari ownership, and they wore their ambition plainly.

The Spyder came first — and in doing so, delivered two pieces of news simultaneously. The first was the car itself: a two-seat open-top grand tourer that broke a long Maserati absence from the convertible segment, offering something the brand had not produced in the modern era. The second was the engine beneath its bonnet. The 4200GT Spyder was the first car in history to be powered by the Ferrari-Maserati F136 family of V8 engines — a 4.2-litre naturally aspirated 90-degree V8 that displaced 4,244 cc through a bore and stroke of 92 mm and 80 mm respectively, with a cross-plane forged steel crankshaft, dual chain-driven overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing at the intake, and dry-sump lubrication. The Spyder debuted this engine before the Coupé, before Ferrari itself used the F136 in its own cars — a point of genuine historical distinction. That same engine family went on to power the Ferrari F430, the Ferrari 458 Italia, the Ferrari California, and the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, serving the group for nearly two decades.

The engine produced 390 PS at 7,000 rpm and 450 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm — a figure that dismissed the 3200 GT's complex twin-turbocharged predecessor with the straightforward authority of a larger, naturally aspirated unit. Two transmission options were available: a six-speed manual for those who preferred the classical engagement, and the Graziano Cambiocorsa automated manual with steering wheel paddle shifters, which allowed gear changes of remarkable speed. The Spyder's wheelbase, at 2,440 mm, was shorter than the Coupé's 2,660 mm by a meaningful margin, giving it quicker responses and a more immediate feel in corners. Zero to 100 km/h took under five seconds. Top speed exceeded 285 km/h. The soft top folded electrically in thirty seconds.

The body was the work of Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign — the same hand responsible for the Maserati Merak, Bora, Ghibli, 3200 GT, and Quattroporte III, as well as the Volkswagen Golf, the BMW M1, and the original DeLorean. The exterior incorporated the Trident emblem into the radiator grille and drew its front-end treatment from Maserati's racing sports cars of the 1960s, presenting a silhouette that was muscular without aggression and elegant without softness. Enrico Fumia designed the interior. Between 2001 and 2007, Maserati sold approximately 2,000 examples of the Spyder in all configurations.

Yellow is the colour that makes no concessions to understatement on the 4200GT Spyder. Where other shades allow the car to suggest its character, yellow announces it — the proportions, the long bonnet, the swept cabin, the Trident on the grille, all given maximum presence by a colour associated with Italian performance cars of the most extrovert type. On a Spyder in particular, with the roof down, it is the colour that makes the point most completely.

BBR Models of Saronno — the official model manufacturer of Ferrari, founded in 1984, with over 40 years of Italian hand-craft behind their work — renders the 4200GT Spyder in their precision resin format, in BBR's plexiglass showcase, brand new and factory sealed.
